Peter Moores Foundation celebrates
10 years of Opera in English with
Chandos Records
(and 31 years of opera recordings in English)
In October 2005, a new recording of Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras, will be at the heart of celebrations for the 10th anniversary of Opera in English, the award-winning label established by the Peter Moores Foundation with Chandos Records, to record operas sung in English translation.
Opera in English was launched in October 1995 with a new recording of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville conducted by Gabriele Bellini, starring British baritone Alan Opie as the barber Figaro, American tenor Bruce Ford as Count Almaviva and Welsh mezzo-soprano Della Jones as Rosina. It was the first of 30 new opera recordings to be made over the decade – the most recent of which are The Magic Flute, conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras (with Rebecca Evans, Barry Banks and Simon Keenlyside), The Flying Dutchman (with Nina Stemme and John Tomlinson), and Fidelio (with Christine Brewer and Richard Margison), both conducted by David Parry.
The series has been planned to make main-stream operatic repertoire as approachable as possible through using the English language – and a great range of communicators. Amongst the many highlights are: Yvonne Kenny singing the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, Jane Eaglen as Tosca, Andrew Shore in Wozzeck, Falstaff and Don Pasquale, Janice Watson as Jenufa, Nicolai Gedda in The Abduction of the Seraglio, Turandot and Idomeneo, John Tomlinson as The Flying Dutchman and Boris Godunov, Dennis O’Neill in Cav and Pag, Turandot, Aida and Un ballo in maschera, and the casts of The Thieving Magpie and The Marriage of Figaro. Added to these are re-issues of historic recordings from the 1970s and 1980s, including Janet Baker in Mary Stuart and Julius Caesar and Werther, Valerie Masterson in La traviata, Charles Craig in Otello, and the famous Goodall Ring Cycle, recorded live at the London Coliseum between 1973 and 1977, making a total of 44 opera recordings.
These, together with a series of recital discs by Thomas Allen, Barry Banks, Christine Brewer, Bruce Ford, Elizabeth Futral, Yvonne Kenny, Della Jones, Alastair Miles, Diana Montague, Dennis O’Neill, Alan Opie, Andrew Shore and John Tomlinson, plus a number of ‘highlight’ discs, form the largest collection of opera recorded in English translation.
Peter Moores has said:
‘A language is not a subject to be studied; it is a means of communication. And that is really what the Opera in English series is about. It’s about understanding the opera. Tosca is not better in English than it is in Italian; it is simply that it’s in your own language, so you can understand it. Opera in English is about opening a door, but not about pushing people through it. I want people to have the opportunity to share in something that I’ve been able to explore and enjoy.’
