Three solid, workmanlike acts are constructed, and every element in the music (melody, rhythm, orchestration and so forth) bears the imprint of care and skill. Every situation stimulates its emotional response - in its way, the opera is a triumph of form, yet there is nothing merely formal about it... and this is its first recording.
